Implementation strategies can serve as the foundation for an implementation plan that outlines the implementation process.

Five categories of implementation strategies

Implementation strategies can serve as the foundation for an implementation plan that outlines the implementation process. These strategies are classified into the following groups:

Dissemination strategies focus on enhancing the knowledge, awareness, attitudes, and intentions of staff and stakeholders regarding the adoption of the innovation. Essential messages and materials are created and disseminated to pertinent audiences.

Implementation process strategies facilitate the planning and execution of an innovation throughout various stages of implementation. This encompasses evaluating the context, engaging with key stakeholders, and monitoring the implementation while making necessary improvements.

Integration strategies are designed to embed a specific innovation within a particular setting. For instance, if the goal is for staff to adopt a new practice, it may be necessary to revise and update staff roles and responsibilities, as well as modify record systems.

Capacity-building strategies aim to enhance the motivation and ability of individuals to participate in implementation, which may include providing training.

Scale-up strategies focus on developing the capacity to implement policies, practices, or services across multiple settings. Examples of these strategies include train-the-trainer programs and the establishment of system infrastructure, such as data systems.
